Christian Faith: Pentecost 27th May
WHAT IS PENTECOST ?
Meaning “fiftieth day”, Pentecost is celebrated 50 days after Easter. It marks the birth and empowerment of the Church of the New Testament through the Holy Spirit. Christ’s disciples went out into the world full of energy and vigour. This is a time to renew and rejoice in our faith.
RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND
After the ascension of Jesus into heaven, 120 of His disciples gathered in an upper room in Jerusalem on the Jewish Harvest Festival (the 50th day after Passover), as they had been instructed by Jesus. While they were indoors praying, a sound like that of a mighty rushing wind filled the house and tongues of fire descended upon their heads. This was the outpouring of the Holy Spirit on human flesh promised by God through the prophet Joel (Joel 2:28-29), which inspired them to go into the world and spread the Good News of God’s Kingdom to all people. The Holy Spirit inspires Christians to do good works in the world.
