Christian Faith: Advent 2nd-24th December

WHAT IS ADVENT ?

Advent is a time of watchfulness, prayer and preparation for the celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas.

The festival is often marked by the successive lighting of candles on each Sunday in Advent and with Advent calendars.

RELIGIOUS BACKGROUND

Acts of service to those who are in need are at the centre of Christianity. Jesus Christ lived a life that reflected God’s love for humankind; this is what leads to this obligation.

Jesus was born under circumstances of poverty, and into the frailty of human existence. This reminds Christians to give assistance to those in need, and to give gifts, in celebration of the gift that is given to mankind in Jesus’ birth. Jesus’ birth also encourages Christians to see Jesus in everyone in need:

Then the righteous will answer him and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? When did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? When did we see you ill or in prison, and visit you?’ And the king will say to them in reply, ‘Amen, I say to you, whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.(Matthew 25:37-40)
